Your Road to Good Health

Your Road to Good Health

The key to reading a map is to first understand where you are on the map.

Ayurveda and it’s 5000 year tradition of natural healing and remedies, can provide that road map you need for your journey on the road to good health in 2015.  This belief of health and wellness depends on the delicate balance between mind, body and spirit.
Here’s the short and sweet of what you need to know to create a balanced state of health in your life.
Your Ayurvedic constitution is composed of your balanced and imbalanced state.
1. Your unique balanced state (Prakriti)  is when all systems are working in perfect harmony.
2. Your imbalanced state (Vikriti) is when some systems need adjusting.
What is your constitution and how can bring it into balance?
There are three Doshas that are the building blocks of your constitution. Understanding your dosha is a fundamental key in your road to wellness.
VATA
Elements are air and space. Think movement, flighty, mobile, clear, light and dry. Usually this person has a slim, long frame, with pointed features and has trouble putting on weight. Essential oils recommended for balance: Sweet Orange, Geranium, Ylang Ylang and Frankincense.
PITTA
Elements are fire and water.  Think sharp, liquid, oily and transformative. These fiery types have passion, strong digestive systems, medium build and sharp strong features. Essential Oils recommended for balance: Rose, Fennel, Sandlewood, Lemon and Peppermint.
KAPHA
Elements are earth and water.  Think heavy, cold, dull, cloudy, hard, and stable. These strong earth types are grounded with a steady pace and appetite, large frame and good long term memory. Essential oils recommended for balance: Rosemary, Peppermint, Basil and Eucalyptus.
YOUR Challenge is to understand where you are on the map with your dosha type.  And if you are out of balance,  remove the quality and incorporate the opposite.  SOUND like a plan?
For example, Pitta imbalances can show by too much heat in the digestive tract or inflammation of the skin. To balance you may add in cooling elements: go for a swim, eliminate spicy foods, or use cooling essential oils such as sandalwood, lemon, and peppermint.
MY top 3 tips for your trip to wellbeing with Ayurveda:
1. Healthy Whole Foods for your type!
Buy a Ayurvedic cookbook – I love “Eat, Taste, Heal: An Ayurvedic Cookbook for Modern Living” and listen to your body. For example: If you tend toward Vata and need grounding, instead of grabbing a salad, incorporate root veggies and soups.
2. Yoga can bring harmony to the mind, body and spirit.  If you are a Pitta, hot yoga may be to aggravating so try some vinyasa or yin.
3. Choose Healthy Habits to maintain balance.  Pitta can find balance in exercise, where Kapha can be happy reading.  Find habits that match your personal dosha and nourish yourself!
Hope these tips help you on your road to wellness in 2015!
