“Stop and Smell the Roses”. What a beautiful concept…yet how many times do we say that is impossible in our fast paced world of iphones, computers, and racing from one meeting to the next? Why are we rushing through life…accepting the stress it involves? Maybe to get one step closer to the image of perfection in our own mind? What is that image anyway?
Have you ever thought of actually spending a day photographing what exactly is our “perfect” day? What will our photos look like? The beauty of this simple task, of which resource we have right in our own pockets and purses, the iphone or ipad, might actually show us that inner Artist. That inner Artist that we are putting on hold until we finish whatever we are doing with work or “must do’s” is actually right there with us every moment just waiting for a chance to show it’s lovely face.
Research shows that mind and body are inextricably linked ,and the interaction between them can produce physical changes. It has been proven time and again that creativity and art therapy are valuable tools for emotional wellness. Let’s release that muscle tension and let go of that headache and to do list to take a moment to look through our environment through the lens. Let’s observe our surroundings, close our eyes, and focus.
Start the juices flowing: breathe, paint a photo our minds eye and see our image of perfection, grab that camera, and shoot.
I did just this on a short tromp through the woods while on vacation in New Zealand constantly reminding myself-don’t think, just shoot.
Noticing the bark and mold on the trees had me intrigued for a good 30 minutes. During this time, I started noticing many things around me that I had passed right by before.
The cows were mooing through this field which I had passed many times before but never stopped to really take it in.
The short tromp always ended up in a foot soak in the waterfall. This time I listened and observed. The sounds of running water, the colors….I stopped to capture it and life in this photo brings me back to that place and that feeling of serenity every time.
Any moment can be the moment that changes our day from a negative to a positive and gives us a relief of the stress of every day life. Photography can help us realize that we are already perfect, right here, right now in this moment.
Be Present. Be Creative. Practice Mindfulness. Our inner Artist is waiting to blossom!
