Homemade Vapor Rub

Homemade Vapor Rub

It’s that season! No matter how hard we try, the dreaded sniffle seems to catch up to us eventually. Generally, cold germs seem to attach themselves to one of my children then follow us home from school or the grocery store. I’ve started filling roller bottles with homemade vapor rub and keeping them on hand for relief whenever one of us is congested or under the weather.

I feel so much better about using an oil-based rub rather than a petroleum-based rub on my family. And, I’ve had wonderful luck finding relief with these. One particular day, both of my boys had runny noses when we were scheduled to take some photos. I put a little of this rub on their chests and feet, and within minutes they cleared up and I didn’t have to wipe their boogers a single time during the session.

Generally, we tend to use these most often at night to breathe easier while we sleep. I keep 3 on hand, all are a custom strength. The ratio of essential oil to fractionated coconut oil is weakest for my youngest son, a little stronger for my oldest son and very strong for the grownups. I love having them prepared and ready to go when needed. The roller bottle is nice for the application so you don’t have to get your hands in it, which is especially useful when it comes to squirmy little people.

So simple. So effective. Here is the recipe…

Homemade Vapor Rub

Fractionated Coconut Oil (my preferred carrier oil for this because it has a long shelf life)

Breathe Essential Oil (this is DoTERRA’s Respiratory Blend. It includes Laurel Leaf, Peppermint Plant, Eucalyptus Leaf/Stem, Melaleuca Leaf, Lemon Peel, Ravensara Leaf, and Cardamom Seed Essential Oils)

Glass Roller Bottle

For young or sensitive skin, start with only 1 drop of Breathe Essential Oil to 1 – 3 teaspoons of Fractionated Coconut oil. Increase drops of Breathe if you prefer a stronger blend.

Combine ingredients in the glass roller bottle. Roll on chest, back and bottom of feet to relieve congestion.

Feel better soon 🙂
