My two young boys are always touching everything in sight. Then after they do, they just love to stick their hands in their mouths… BLEH!
Hand sanitizer has been a “must have” item in my bag for quite some time now. But, I was never pleased with the store-bought products that I found. They always seemed to contain ingredients that concerned me… either because they would include ingredients that I didn’t want to be putting on my children’s hands (or my own, for that matter) or I questioned the effectiveness of some of the natural solutions. Many of them would really dry out our skin as well.
I am now making my own natural hand sanitizer out of non-toxic ingredients that are known to fight off germs. I also love that the oils in this mixture give this solution some staying power for some protection after we spray it on our hands.
Here is the recipe…
Homemade Hand Sanitizer
1 teaspoon Distilled Water
1.5 teaspoons Witch Hazel (lower alcohol content than rubbing alcohol)
1 teaspoon Fractionated Coconut Oil (preferred carrier oil because of it’s long shelf life)
1 teaspoon Vitamin E Oil (moisturizing AND a natural preservative)
1 teaspoon Pure Aloe Vera (hydrates the skin)
30 drops On Guard Essential Oil (This is DoTERRA’s Immunity Blend. It includes wild orange, clove, CINNAMON, plus more. Click here to read an article recently published in the New York Times on the antimicrobial properties of cinnamon oil.)
12 drops Lemon Essential Oil (another e.o. also known for it’s germ-fighting abilities)
Combine all ingredients in a 1-ounce glass spritzer bottle* and shake before each use. Spray on hands or surfaces as needed. Store in your purse, diaper bag or car to combat germs while you are on the go.
(*Using a glass container is important because citrus essential oils can break down plastic containers… leaving behind unwanted toxins and likely negating the whole reason you are making this recipe!)
