Have you heard about Grounding? Or Earthing? They are both the same concept of reconnecting with the Earth. Now I don’t mean this as finding time to go hiking, camping or surfing. I mean it literally: making your skin physically connected to the Earth. One of my favorite ways to accomplish this is with grounding shoes.
Let’s get a little back-story here about why there is a concern with forming this person-earth connection before talking about shoes. All living beings historically lived in physical contact with the ground. Animals walked on dirt and grass daily. Plants grew in non-potted dirt. Humans even slept on the ground! This bond formed from Earth to living beings was extremely beneficial in helping to dispel free-radicals from organisms. Now many living beings are insulated from this strong bond in the form of wood floors, high rise buildings, carpet, and rubber soles. Our free-radicals are building up and causing various forms of inflammation in our bodies!
It can seem scary to be stuck in a society trying to insulate us from our daily and natural doctor, but there are solutions. Collectively the solutions are called “Earthing” or “Grounding”. You can do this with grounding sheets and pillow cases, earthing patches, swimming, grounding shoes and more. They all have the common goal of rediscovering that Earth-to-Body connection. Let’s check out what these solutions can do for our health.
That sounds like a lot of pills that can be thrown out from the medicine cabinet to me! One of the easiest ways to accomplish grounding is through your feet. Walking barefoot of the beach, in the grass or even on cement are grounding. Now, I don’t know about you, but walking barefoot on sidewalks all the time would get me some serious and undesired callouses. And sometimes I walk through a field where there are occasional shards of glass. There are ways to protect your feet while still benefiting from grounding: Grounding Shoes.
More and more shoe companies are popping up that focus on this issue. There are shoes that are made with only leather soles, which when damp from the wet ground or your slightly sweaty feet foster the earth-body connection. Some shoes have conductive copper spots that touch your toes and the ground. And the good news is, they are all stylish! You can be grounding without being in-your-face with anyone. Or gift some grounding shoes without the person knowing.
